Specifically, Senate Resolution 123 and Senate Concurrent Resolution 166 both call for a task force to study the “social, economic, and religious impacts of enacting marriage equality in Hawaii.”
The sponsors are Clayton Hee, who helped enact civil unions legislation in 2011, and Mike Gabbard, known for his consistent opposition to gay civil rights.
While support for gay marriage is growing nationwide — and politicians, courts, legislatures and voters are following suit — the Hawaii Legislature chose not to hear gay marriage bills this session.
