He received a $1,000 award — courtesy of the HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union — along with a plaque and another gift, according to a press release.
The award, established in 2007, each year recognizes a teacher who demonstrates excellence during the first four semesters in a classroom. It alternates annually between elementary and secondary school teachers.
Rankie hails from New York and joined Mauka Lani in 2011 to teach fifth grade. He filled in for a teacher who unexpectedly resigned, leaving the school desperate for an immediate replacement in the inclusion classroom. Inclusion classrooms include students with special needs.
Within his first year at Mauka Lani, Rankie also began coaching the school’s basketball and track teams. He also serves as the School Community Council Chair.
