The possible discovery of a historic site caused the Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting to suspend building permits for two single family homes under construction in Aina Haina.
According to a press release, the city suspended the permits after Department of Land and Natural Resources Chair William Aila said he believed an archaeological inventory survey should be done at the construction site on Hao Street.
Aila’s suggestion came after several community members complained that the construction would impact historical sites at the location. The State Historic Preservation Division, which is under the DLNR umbrella, does not currently have any records of any historical sites existing at the construction site.
