Honolulu’s permitting department will begin charging fees for building permits for solar panels on April 6, after nearly six years of waiving the charges. For a typical solar PV system the fee will be about $740.

The waiver was implemented in October 2007 to encourage residents to install solar panels, but since then the amount of lost revenue to the city has risen sharply. The waived fees have totaled about $18 million since 2007.

The PV fees will be used to hire more inspectors and improve service, according to the city’s Department of Planning and Permitting.

DPP is updating the online PV permit application system to allow contractors to pay the new fees electronically. More information will be available soon at www.honoluludpp.org.
