The water commission wields power over the allocation of water in the state and has been embroiled in controversies such as the Na Wai Eha case on Maui. The nominating committee selects candidates that are then sent to the governor for a final decision.
From the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation:
Today, the Water Commission’s Nominating Committee begins screening applicants for the two vacancies coming up on the commission on July 1, 2013. This is the first public announcement ever of the process the Nominating Committee is following, after massive criticism of the stealthy proceedings conducted last year, contrary to the Sunshine Law, which led to the appointment and confirmation of Ted Yamamura. What a ray of sunlight!
