Hawaii public school students in grades six through 12 are encouraged to compete by writing a script for a 30-second commercial. The script should show students what they can do to prepare for college and their careers.
GEAR UP Hawaii is a federally funded program under Hawaii P-20 Partnerships for Education that aims to increase the number of low-income students who attend college. The goal is to have 55 percent of the state’s working-age adults holding college degrees by 2025.
The contest runs April 1 through 20. Winning students will receive an iPad mini and other prizes. One winner will have his or her script professionally produced into commercials that will air on select TV and radio stations.
