Asked by Civil Beat whether she will also return a part of her pay in support of government furloughs, Rep. Colleen Hanabusa said today she’ll donate 5 percent of her salary to Hawaii charities.

“While I have been on the record as supporting a Congressional pay cut since my first days in the U.S. House, I think our nation’s current economic situation calls for more direct action, particularly with respect to the impact it has had on our families and communities,” Hanabusa said in a statement.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, following the lead of President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, announced Tuesday she will give back 5 percent of her salary because of the furloughs.
