Three new lion cubs.

At the Honolulu Zoo.

Waiting for their names.

Profound. We know. But it probably doesn’t compare to the poetry that will be read at the zoo Saturday morning.

About 600 children competed for the chance to name three lion cubs, one male and two female, that are some the newest residents of the Honolulu Zoo.

Their task? Write the best haiku.

Now the three winners will read their haiku at the zoo at which point the lion cub names will be announced.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell plans to attend the event that will officially debut the cubs.
