Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said the members of his cabinet will get a 5 percent “snap back” in pay on July 1.
City employees took a 5 percent pay cut in 2009 to help with budget concerns.
That cut will be restored — or “snap back” — on July 1.
Here’s what Caldwell had to say in a May 24 letter to the Honolulu City Council:
“All of my Cabinet members work extremely hard to ensure that the core City services are provided to all the residents. They have sacrificed along with the City employees over the past four years by taking comparable pay cuts. Therefore, I will be granting the five percent salary restoration effective July 1, 2013. However, I will not be considering any salary adjustments for my Cabinet until their counterpart bargaining unit contracts have been settled.”
The Honolulu Salary Commission has recommended pay raises for cabinets members and other elected officials, including the mayor.
Caldwell said he will reject any pay raises for himself. He also will
not take the 5 percent pay restoration.
His base salary is $136,428. With the pay cut it’s $129,606.
