U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard was on the west side today visiting some Zones of School Innovation schools as part of an effort to see how Race to the Top is playing out in the islands.

She stopped by Nanakuli Elementary, Nanakuli Intermediate & High School and Nanaikapono High School. All are in the Hawaii Department of Education‘s Nanakuli-Waianae Complex Area, which as been designated a Zone of School Innovation in the state’s Race to the Top grant. The other is the Big Island’s Kau-Keeau-Pahoa Complex Area, which the congresswoman visited yesterday.

The zones were established to support struggling schools that are in rural, hard-to-staff areas that serve large numbers of disadvantaged and Native Hawaiian students.

Gabbard heads to Maui next to meet with Baldwin High School JROTC students.
