Claims of police brutality coupled with pictures of a man’s bruised body broadcast across the local airwaves has caused the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office to clarify its earlier statements about a man’s death.
The Medical Examiner’s Office just released information saying Stephen Dinnan did not suffer injuries “consistent with being beaten,” but that his wounds were consistent with those that “were consistent with restraint.”
Earlier in the week the Medical Examiner’s Office had said Dinnan, who needed to be put on life support after an altercation with Honolulu police on Monday, did not suffer “assaultive-type injuries.”
But after Dinnan’s family gave the media photos of Dinnan covered in bruises with a breathing tube coming from his mouth, Dr. Kanthis De Alwis at the Medical Examiner’s Office wanted to clarify her agency’s earlier statement.
The Medical Examiner’s Office still has not released an official cause of death for the 35-year-old Dinnan, and the police officer involved in the altercation has been placed on administrative leave.
Civil Beat partner KITV has this report on what Dinnan’s family has had to say about his death and medical examiner’s previous statements.
