Hawaii’s beaches scored fourth out of 30 states for water quality, according to a report released this week by the Natural Resources Defense Council.
The report is based on state data that indicates the presence of bacteria, viruses and other contaminants that can make swimmers sick.
Dozens of the state’s beaches exceeded safe water quality standards at some point in 2012 — the primary reason being stormwater runoff. But overall, only 3 percent of samples collected violated clean water standards.
