Just days after Civil Beat posted the results of its poll in the Schatz-Hanabusa race, the two candidates are engaging in a war of polls.

Schatz’s campaign this afternoon released its own poll calling the race a “dead heat,” in the words of the pollster. Schatz holds a 38 percent to 37 percent lead among likely Democratic primary voters, a lead within the margin of error of 4 percent.

This came hours after Politico reported an Emily’s List poll showing a very different landscape. Hanabusa drew support from 46 percent of likely Democratic primary voters, compared to 35 percent for Schatz. The margin of error in that poll was 3.53 percent.

The Schatz poll is more in line with Civil Beat’s poll, which showed Schatz having a 36 percent to 33 percent lead — a statistical dead heat considering a margin of error of 3.3 percent. The Civil Beat poll was of registered voters, regardless of whether they were likely to vote in the primary.

A memo by Schatz’s polling firm, The Mellman Group, saw good news for Schatz. If you believe that poll, Hanabusa is known to more voters than Schatz. Still, among those who were familiar with both candidates, Schatz leads Hanabusa, 47 percent to 34 percent — suggesting that Schatz may pick up support as more voters learn about him.
