From a press release Monday (July 29):

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts is looking for artists to create works in honor of the late Senator Daniel K. Inouye and Representative Patsy T. Mink.

The 2013 Legislature passed a law asking the foundation to commission sculptures honoring Inouye and Mink, both Democrats. The sculptures, which will cost $250,000 each, will be placed in the area near the Capitol known as the Honolulu Civic Center.

The money comes from one-percent of the cost of capital improvement projects undertaken by the state. Hawaii was the first state to have such a law, and remains a national leader for art in public places.

The works are expected to be in line with historic statues of King Kamehameha, Prince Kuhio, Father Damien and Duke Kahanamoku.
