A local nonprofit is trying to leverage a recent federal decision denying domestic partners the same benefits married couple receive.

Hawaii United for Marriage said Wednesday that the Office of Personnel Management’s announcement that the government is treating civil unions differently than legal same-sex marriages is an important development in the wake of the recent Supreme Court decision overturning part of the Defense of Marriage Act.

“This means Hawaii’s same-sex couples, including those who entered civil unions, continue to be left out,” Jacce Mikulanec, the group’s representative for the Japanese American Citizen’s League, said in a news release. “The bottom line is that the time is right for Hawaii to pass marriage equality.”
