State Rep. Mark Takai, a Democrat representing Aiea, announced today (Wednesday, Aug. 7) that he is running for Hawaii’s 1st Congressional District seat.

The seat is open because U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa is running against U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz.

Takai, 46, is a UH Manoa graduate who was recently promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Hawaii Army National Guard.

Takai joins two other declared candidates for the CD1 seat, Honolulu Councilman Stanley Chang and state Sen. Will Espero, both Democrats. Look for Civil Beat’s latest story on the CD1 race later today or early tomorrow.

A fourth potential candidate, Councilmember Ikaika Anderson, is scheduled to make clear his intentions Thursday noon at a Kakaako Waterfront Park press conference. Civil Beat will be there.
