Councilwoman Margaret Wille withdrew Bill 79 on Tuesday, which would have banned new GMO crops on the Big Island and placed regulations on genetically modified papayas, according to Big Island Now.
The bill has attracted heated debate from both sides of the aisle and papaya farmers are reporting declining sales because of the controversy. The fight seems far from over, however, with another council member vowing to introduce a new GMO bill.
