Kauai police officers arrested a school bus driver for driving under the influence of an intoxicant this morning after he crashed the bus into a boat in Kapaa.
Four Kapaa Middle School students were on the bus at the time of the accident but did not report any injuries. They were later transported to school on another school bus.
Police said they received a call from citizens that the 74-year-old Lawrence Koth was swerving on a roadway en route to the school.
Police located the bus at approximately 7:20 a.m. on Kamalu Road and observed the vehicle weaving. Officers then initiated a traffic stop on Olohena Road, near the Puuopae Road junction. The bus was attempting to pull to the shoulder of the roadway when it sideswiped a parked boat and trailer.
Koth failed an initial field sobriety test at the scene of the accident, after which he was arrested. He was released from custody upon posting $250 bail.
UPDATE (Aug. 9 10:15 a.m.): Kauai County Spokeswoman Sarah Blane said Koth passed a Breathalyzer test and did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol. Police are awaiting results from a test that would reveal whether other intoxicants — illegal or prescription drugs, for example — were a factor, she said.
