An accused murderer was found dead in his cell at the Oahu Community Correctional Center over the weekend.

The cause of death is believed to be suicide.

Brian Kim was arrested in July after he allegedly stabbed to death 58-year-old Robert Coleman Jr. in Kailua District Park.

Kim faced a second-degree murder charge and was being held on $250,000 bail.

OCCC staff found Kim in his cell at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. He had a history of mental illness and was housed alone in a single cell. He was not on suicide watch.

In May, Hawaii Department of Public Safety Director Ted Sakai said his agency had a “crisis on our hands” after three inmates died at OCCC in two months.

That spate of deaths caused state Sen. Will Espero — who is now running for Congress — to call for an investigation into the conditions at the jail.
