Sludge dredged from a private marina in Hawaii Kai and dumped in Waianae is causing quite the commotion.

It’s also led to the City and County of Honolulu levying a fine against the trucking company that’s been transferring the sludge for not having the proper permitting.

You can find the full back story here.

Now Honolulu City Councilwoman Kymberly Pine is weighing in. She represents Waianae and now wants the sludge taken back to Hawaii Kai.

“I will make sure that I do everything in my power, including exploring all legislative options to stop this private marina from dumping its sludge in our community and ensure that this unchecked dumping never happens again,” Pine said in a press release she sent out Thursday evening

She also went after statements Robert Clark, the president of the Hawaii Kai Community Association, made to Hawaii News Now in which he called Waianae residents’ concerns “total ignorance” and said they should be asking for more sludge.

“I take great offense to Mr. Clark’s statement and demand that he apologize to the people of Waianae for his comments,” Pine said. “The people of Waianae are smart innovative citizens who care deeply about their ‘aina.”image
