The board of directors of the Hawaii State Teachers Association on Friday (Sept. 27) said it will back same-sex marriage legislation.

The HSTA believes that discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identification must be eliminated,” the board said in a statement.

The announcement comes on the same day that a New Jersey judge ruled that gay couples in the Garden State must be allowed to wed and access federal benefits. That news was welcomed by Hawaii United For Marriage, which is pushing for same-sex marriage here.

“We applaud this court ruling, but also note that Gov. Chris Christie opposes marriage equality, so expect months and possibly years worth of appeals,” said Rep. Chris Lee.

Also, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday (Sept. 26) granted an extension of time to the plaintiffs challenging Hawaii’s anti-gay marriage ban, allowing opening briefs to be filed on Nov. 22 in Jackson v. Abercrombie.
