At least that appears to be the message the Kailua Neighborhood Board might send to the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
Tonight the board is expected to vote on a motion that asks the state’s tourism agency to “respect the zoning and quality of life of our residential neighborhoods and immediately stop promoting Kailua as a tourist destination and an alternative to Waikiki.”
Here’s a link the board provided as a reference to the kind of promotions it no longer wants to see.
Now this might not come as a surprise to some. Kailua has a reputation of being, well, exclusive.
For instance, there was push back when Target first proposed moving into the sleepy Windward community.
Just last year there was a ban on business activity on the town’s beaches as a way of cutting down on crowds.
And forget about putting about putting a landfill anywhere nearby.
There’s also the recent spat over a zone change that would allow an industrial park to expand, something that opponents say could damage environmentally sensitive habitat.
