Historian Nanette Napoleon is organizing a protest march Saturday morning (Sept. 21) outside the Hawaii Convention Center demanding that Hans Ladislaus‘ giant mural be uncovered.
A black cloth currently covers the artwork from public view, following a decision earlier this month by Hawaii Tourism Authority President and CEO Mike McCartney. He was responding to criticism by Paulette Kaanohiokalani Kaleikini and other Hawaiians that the depiction of bones in the mural is offensive.
Napoleon says, “If you don’t like it, you don’t like it. That’s your opinion but that doesn’t give you the right to do what’s going on,” referring to McCartney’s action. HTA did not comment for the KITV report.
