A bill on the Big Island that effectively bans biotech companies and new genetically engineered crops passed a first reading of the full county council on Tuesday.
The vote was 6 to 2, with Dennis Onishi and Greggor Ilagan voting against the bill.
The bill has to pass a second reading by the county council before it can be sent on to the mayor’s office.
(The papaya industry is exempt from the bill.)
Big Island Video News has more on the vote.
