After news unfolded this morning about a deadly shooting at a Nevada middle school, the Hawaii Department of Education announced today that it’s ramping up school safety drills this week at several Oahu high schools.

While the drills, which are being conducted in partnership with the Honolulu Police Department, had been planned for some time, the Nevada tragedy “reinforces the need for continued diligence in ensuring our schools are prepared for emergency situations,” DOE Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi said in a press release.

Details are still emerging about the Nevada shooting, but CNN reports that the shooter — who eventually shot and killed himself — was a student who had taken the handgun from his parents. The shooting left one teacher dead and two students wounded, according to news reports.

The Hawaii DOE conducts annual training for all security personnel and last year teamed up with the HPD to address situations involving active shooters.
