Because of the partial government shutdown, Hawaii’s congressional delegation is working on “a drastically reduced staff,” as Julie McClain, press secretary to Sen. Brian Schatz, explains.

“For that reason, our office has had to cease many of our normal operations like answering constituent phone calls,” McClain said in an email Wednesday (Oct. 2). “So Senator Schatz has decided to spend a portion of each day answering the phones himself in our DC office. I snapped a picture of it today, which is below.”

In related news, Schatz’s Senate re-election campaign is starting a petition demanding that Speaker John Boehner allow a House vote on a “clean” spending bill — with no cuts to Obamacare, for example — to end the budget impasse.

Representatives in the House deserve the opportunity to show their constituents where they stand,” said Schatz.
