Honolulu ranks second nationwide in the percent of workers dependent on a federal paycheck, according to data complied by The Washington Post.
Honolulu ties with Virginia Beach with 17.2 percent of the workforce employed by the federal government, including the military. Colorado Springs ranks first, with 18.8 percent of the workforce comprised of federal employees.
Washington D.C. ranked fourth.
The government shutdown jeopardizes the paychecks of more than 800,000 federal workers who were sent home. The federal government has almost 2 million employees. Civilians who remain on the job will be entitled to their salaries, but might not be paid on time. President Obama has signed a billthat ensures that certain members of the U.S. military and U.S. Coast Guard will be paid during the shutdown.
