Homelessness is a major issue in Hawaii, but the problem could be worse than once thought.

KHON reports that Oahu’s 2013 point-in-time homeless tally could be off by as much as 59 percent.

That count, performed by the state, found that there were 1,475 homeless individuals living on the streets.

But a new study found that there may be as many as 2,350 who could have been classified as homeless.

If true, this would make Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s efforts to curb homelessness even more difficult.
