The inaugural Hawaii Fashion Month kicked off Tuesday (Oct. 1), a community-driven initiative of the Hawaii Fashion Incubator and the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

It’s an opportunity to raise the profile of Hawaii as “a unique, creative and progressive fashion destination while bringing sustainable growth to the local industry, which comprises design, manufacturing, retail, art, education and more,” according to a press release.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie has actually proclaimed October as Hawaii Fashion Month, noting that Hawaii’s industry generates more than $750 million in annual sales, $20.4 million in tax revenues and 3,630 jobs.
