In a ruling likely to reverberate in Hawaii, New Jersey’s Supreme Court says same-sex couples can start marrying on Monday.

The Garden State’s high court denied Gov. Chris Christie’s attempt to block the weddings and “suggested that he will have a difficult time winning an appeal of a lower-court ruling that allowed them,” according to The New York Times.

The Hawaii Legislature will begin a special session Oct. 28 to consider same-sex marriage legislation. While Gov. Neil Abercrombie believes he has the votes to pass the measure, a major sticking point concerns language granting exemptions for religious ceremonies in church facilities.
