‘Done!’ Gov. Abercrombie Signs ‘Marriage Equality’ Bill

Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed Senate Bill 1 this morning at the Hawaii Convention Center, making Hawaii the 15th state to legalize gay marriage.

“Today we move forward into a new era of aloha,” Hawaii Attorney General David Louie said at the beginning of the one-hour signing ceremony. 

After passionate speeches from Sen. Clayton Hee, Rep. Chris Lee and the governor himself, Abercrombie signed the bill with a koa pen that he plans to give to former Hawaii Supreme Court Justice Steven Levinson, whose 1993 opinion spurred the gay-rights movement across America.

“Done!” Abercrombie said with a big smile after he signed the bill.
