A 27-year-old Molokai man tried to escape authorities by jumping into the ocean off Molokai while being transported on the ferry from Molokai to Maui on Thursday afternoon, police said.
Just as the Molokai ferry began pulling away from Kaunakakai Harbor at about 4:15 p.m., Imua Mawae, who had been arrested Thursday morning for violating his probation, claimed to be suffering from seasickness and asked to use the restroom, said Maui police spokesman Lt. William Juan.
While an officer stood near the restroom door, Mawae jumped over the railing of the ferry and into the ocean, Juan said. His hands were still handcuffed, according to a ferry worker, who wished to remain anonymous. Read more.
