Shipping to and from Hawaii Is Getting More Expensive

Matson Navigation Company, Inc., is planning to raise its shipping rates for containers moving to and from Hawaii by about 5.5 percent next year.

The company is tacking on an extra $175 for each westbound container and $85 for each eastbound container starting on January 5.

The company is also raising its terminal handling charge by $50 and $25 for westbound and eastbound containers respectively.

Shipping rates to and from Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and other islands in Micronesia are also increasing by $275 effective Jan. 26, 2014. That’s in addition to a $75 boost in the West Coast terminal handling charge.

Affected island nations include the Republic of Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
