The Honolulu City Council has approved a plan for a new library in west Oahu that would help some of the island’s neediest kids.
Council members approved a special use permit for the structure on Wednesday.
The library would sit on the makai side of Nanaikapono Elementary School.
Nearly 90 percent of the students at the school were considered low-income in the 2011-2012 school year.
The school also has one of the highest rates of chronic absenteeism in the state.
