The clock is ticking on a $142 million deal for Honolulu to sell its 12 affordable housing complexes to a group of private developers.

Now that the buyer, Honolulu Affordable Housing Partners, has claimed the city breached its contract, there’s a 10 day window for Mayor Kirk Caldwell to salvage the deal.

But as of Thursday, Caldwell and his top executives had yet to meet with the buyer. They have been meeting internally, however.

Caldwell’s spokesman Jesse Broder Van Dyke said the discussions involved “next steps,” but that there were no plans to announce publicly.

The mayor has said he wants to do everything in his power to save the deal. There’s a lot at stake if it fails.
