The state Department of Transportation, the City & County of Honolulu and along Maui, Hawaii and Kauai Counties announced Friday that, beginning March 17, the state driver license exam will be available in a variety of languages.

“In addition to English, 12 languages are being offered to better serve our diverse communities. The languages include the following: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tongan, Samoan, Tagalog, Ilocano, Hawaiian, Spanish, Chuukese and Marshallese,” according to a press release.

The DOT’s action appears to be in response to complaints from community groups that said the exams should be offered in more languages.
