Maggot-infested food has led to a hunger strike inside the Federal Detention Center in Honolulu, according to an attorney representing an inmate on the inside.

Hawaii News Now reports that more than a dozen inmates — all of whom are members of the state’s USO Family prison gang — have said they are victims of horrendous conditions inside the facility.

The inmates are facing federal racketeering charges.

Neil Kugiya, an attorney for one of the prison gang members, said the inmates are being deprived of exercise time and visitations. They also say they’re not being given clean underwear.

But by far the most disturbing allegation involves the maggots and other bugs in the kitchen. Kugiya even had an envelope full of the critters to show to show off while talking to the Hawaii News Now reporter who covered the story.
