U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa of Hawaii praised her colleagues today for supporting a House resolution requiring President Barack Obama to “comply with the terms of the War Powers Act and consult with Congress before deploying troops to Iraq.”

The largely bipartisan vote was 370-40. Hawaii’s other congresswoman, Tulsi Gabbard, also voted with the majority.

Hanabusa’s office says House Concurrent Resolution 105 “is consistent with an amendment to the House Defense Appropriations bill introduced by Hanabusa, which passed the House without opposition” last month.

“It takes more than just saying you don’t support military action,” Hanabusa said in a press release. “We must remain vigilant in ensuring that the President shows restraint and observes the letter and spirit of the law. We have to be willing to examine his actions and prevent mission creep.”

Hanabusa has been hammering on the issue of Iraq in her political race against U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz.

This week, her campaign ran an ad in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Wednesday stating, “Brian Schatz is flat out wrong — and misleading voters — when he implies that the nearly 1,000 troops recently sent to Iraq are merely to protect our embassy.”

The Schatz campaign fired back Thursday with its own Star-Advertiser ad, arguing, “On Iraq, Hawaii deserves better than Colleen Hanabusa’s deliberately false attacks on our senator, Brian Schatz.”

Meanwhile, the campaigns have been going at it on Iraq and other issues in email blasts.

The primary is two weeks from tomorrow. But who’s counting?
