Educators and members of the community are encouraged to review test questions aligned to the new Common Core standards and chime in on achievement levels for grade-level proficiency in a national online panel that’s happening this October.

Starting in the spring semester, Hawaii public school students in grades three through eight and 11 will take the new Smarter Balanced assessments in English language arts and math. The nationally developed assessments are aligned to the Common Core standards, a set of rigorous universal academic standards that are aimed at preparing all students for college and careers.

The Smarter Balanced tests are set to replace the Hawaii State Assessment and measure how well the state’s students are learning Common Core.

The online panel invites the public to give feedback on the new assessments and ensure the test results “are based on challenging, yet fair expectations for students,” a Hawaii Department of Education press release says. Participants will also be asked to recommend achievement level scores to determine proficiency.

Registered participants can provide input between October 6 and 17 for up to three hours during a two-day window. To register, visit SmarterBalanced.org/OnlinePanel. The deadline to apply is September 19.

Any computing device that connects to the internet can be used, though cell phones are not recommended because of the size.
