The U.S. House of Representatives today passed legislation to extend tax breaks for charitable giving that expired at the end of last year.

“Passed 277-130, the bill is the latest salvo in the fight between House Republicans and Democrats, including the White House, on extending tax breaks indefinitely,” according to The Hill. “Republicans said extending the tax credits would boost Americans’ charitable giving.”

Democrats, “while generally supportive of the provisions,” said the cost of an extension should be offset elsewhere such as a renewal of unemployment insurance.

The vote was largely along party lines.

It’s not clear whether the U.S. Senate will pass the House’s bill.

The Hill said the Obama administration was likely to veto the bill should it reach the president’s desk.

Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii voted against the measure.

Colleen Hanabusa, who is campaigning for the U.S. Senate in the islands, did not vote.
