Former Hawaii Gov. John Waihee has thrown his support behind Brian Schatz in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary.
Waihee cited a number of reasons for supporting Schatz, including his work and positions on Native Hawaiian issues, the environment and Social Security.
“Perhaps what is most important, Brian is a very strong person who will do the right thing for Hawaii,” Waihee said in a press release. “He is principled and unafraid to take on the toughest issues.”
Schatz was appointed by Gov. Neil Abercrombie in December 2012 to fill two years of the late Dan Inouye’s Senate term. He was Abercrombie’s lieutenant governor at the time.
U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, Inouye’s preferred successor, is challenging Schatz for the remaining two years of the six-year term.
Former governors George Ariyoshi and Ben Cayetano and backing Hanabusa, citing her record of experience.
