Potential water contamination has prompted the closure tomorrow of four schools in the Hanamaulu and Lihue areas, according to the Department of Education.
The schools are Kauai High, Kamakahelei Middle, King Kaumualii Elementary and Wilcox Elementary, which serve about 3,500 students total. Tomorrow, Aug. 1, is the first day of classes for most Hawaii public schools.
The island’s water system was compromised during a construction project in Hanamaulu, prompting the Kauai Department of Water to issue a “boil water advisory.” The water department is testing the water, and results are expected to be available tomorrow.
Bill Arakaki, the superintendent of Kauai schools, decided to close the schools as a precaution to ensure the health and safety of students, teachers and staff at the schools.
