U.S. forces launched a new round of airstrikes in Iraq today against militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, known as ISIS or ISIL, according to The Hill.
That report came at about 10:30 a.m. HST.
As CNN reported, “Two U.S. F/A-18 jet fighters bombed artillery of Sunni Islamic extremists in Iraq on Friday, escalating America’s military involvement more than two years after President Barack Obama brought home forces from the country.”
The Hill has this report on U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa’s thoughts on Obama’s decision to conduct airstrikes.
“Airstrikes are the wrong response to this situation,” Hanabusa said yesterday. “Getting involved in airstrikes moves us a dangerous step closer to direct involvement in Iraq’s sectarian civil war, an entanglement we must avoid.”

The Hawaii congresswoman continued: “I fully support humanitarian aid to those trapped by ISIS in the Sinjar Mountains. We cannot allow a humanitarian crisis to draw us into a war that would again cost the Iraqi people far too much in destruction and lives lost.”
The Hill says U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, Hanabusa’s opponent on tomorrow’s Democratic primary, has not commented on the attacks. The issue of America’s role in Iraq has been an issue in the Senate race.
Meanwhile, The Hill has this report on how lawmakers remain divided “over whether the U.S. should expand those airstrikes or provide more military assistance to Baghdad.”
Among other things, the report says this: “Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) called for the U.S. response to ISIS to be ‘overwhelming,’ and a ‘direct blow,’ according to CNN.”
