The inaugural Honolulu Pulse Awards, powered by Star-Advertiser, were announced Friday, letting the world know the best bar to grab a drink at or place to go on a cheap date.

But the categories weren’t limited to dining out.

They also included things like “Best New Thing” and “Best Place To Take Visitors.” That’s where things got really interesting, which could go down as “Best Understatement.”

H&M Waikiki won “Best New Thing” over the Ramen Burger, Kendama, Mars Comedy Club and Same-Sex Marriage. Yes, a department store is a better new thing than a historic civil rights victory.

Cheap club clothes certainly supercede an artery-clogging sandwich. But marriage equality?

Not sure it’s any consolation, but the people who picked H&M are the same ones who decided Ala Moana Center is the best place to take visitors in Hawaii, arguably the most beautiful place in the world.

Who would want to go to Lanikai or Hanauma Bay — two of the four finalists — over a crowded, open-air mall? Yes, better to fly thousands of miles to spend thousands of dollars on stuff.

The story on the awards doesn’t say how many readers of the entertainment website voted, just that Pulse attracts more than 200,000 unique visitors a month. Read the full results here.
