Usually when Honolulu’s daily newspaper disses us — which it does frequently — we let it slide.
After all, Civil Beat is built on a culture of civility and professionalism. That’s why you’ll see us regularly refer to the Star-Advertiser and other media on our site.
They’re part of the media landscape, part of the culture, part of the community and it seems silly to let competitive pettiness override good sense.
But this one is too bizarre to let it go.
Check out this picture that ran on the paper’s website Wednesday afternoon.
Yes, that’s Civil Beat’s chief photographer, PF Bentley, chatting up U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa over on the Big Island.
PF is over there covering the aftermath of the storm and the interesting political scene that is playing out as Hanabusa and U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz scramble for last-minute votes in the two Puna precincts that are scheduled to vote Friday to wrap up the tight primary. (Assuming the election even happens; Hanabusa is suing to delay the vote.)
Check out the caption.
“Former White House political photographer PF Bentley joked with Rep. Colleen Hanabusa at Puna’s Maku’u Farmers Market on Tuesday …”
Seriously?
That’s pretty bad, even for them. No mention of you know who.
And besides that it’s inaccurate. PF never worked for the White House. He was Time magazine’s longtime photographer assigned to the White House.
But enough said. We think you get the picture.
