Our media partner KITV had this report as of 8 a.m. today:

PAHOA, Hawaii —After traveling for 123 days, a Big Island lava flow approaches a couple’s doorsteps.  Hawaii County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira says the lava is 20 feet into the first Pahoa property in its path, as of Tuesday morning.

The flow continues to travel at 5-to-10-yards-per-hour.  As of 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, the front of the flow is less than 500 yards from Pahoa Village Road.

It forced the closure Sunday night of a portion of that roadway.  It’s a life-changer for many in Pahoa.

After creeping more than 13 miles from Pu’u ‘O’o, the June 27th lava flow has reached Pahoa’s doorstep and Madame Pele has entered.

A helicopter crew checked out the flow’s progress and was surrounded by smoke from the burning brush below.

“Hopefully, Pahoa will still be viable because there’s a lot of wonderful people here and good businesses,” said Charlene Ewing of Sirius Hotspot Coffee.  “We’re just saying our prayers about it.”

Ewing has owned and operated Sirius Hotspot Coffee in Pahoa for the past three years.

“We’re going to stay open until the smoke comes,” said Ewing. …
