On this Veterans Day, The Hill has this article on how the number of military veterans in the U.S. House and Senate “has been on a steady decline for nearly three decades.”
The story reports, “In the current Congress, only about 20 percent of the members in each chamber have military experience.”
But there is “a new crop” of Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans looking for other ways to continue their public service, The Hill explains.
“In many cases, the service of these elected officials has been a boon to their campaigns and critical to their personal story. Veterans groups argue that those with military experience are as important now as they ever have been.”
U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth endorsing state Rep. Mark Takai’s 2014 campaign for Congress at the Veterans Hall in Honolulu.
The article highlights the career of Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), a McKinley High School graduate on Oahu who also attended the University of Hawaii.
Duckworth is also profiled in this story in Politico titled “From Army to Congress, a tough mission.”
U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, of course, is also a veteran, as is Congressman-elect Mark Takai. Gabbard and Duckworth — both Democrats — supported Takai’s campaign.
