Former Maui County mayoral candidate Beau Hawkes, who was Tasered as he ran from a police officer in a viral video, was found guilty as charged Wednesday for disregarding the officer’s orders and driving away from a traffic stop.

A 2nd Circuit Court jury deliberated Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning before reaching verdicts.

“This case is about the defendant disobeying the law and expecting special treatment,” Deputy Prosecutor Terence Herndon told jurors during closing arguments Tuesday afternoon. “He cannot simply follow his own rules or personal beliefs. That’s just not how society works.

“He dared anyone who got in the way of his beliefs to catch him. He ran. The law caught up to him.”

Hawkes, who chose to represent himself in the criminal case, said he committed no crime when he drove away from a traffic stop for having no license plates or vehicle tax on his truck. …

Hawkes finished last in the Aug. 9 primary with just 380 votes or 1.3 percent of the total. He’s set to be sentenced Feb. 25.
