Hawaii remains perhaps the most expensive place to live in the United States, but at least gasoline prices are improving.

According to AAA, a gallon of regular unleaded averaged $3.55 as of Friday. That’s 35 cents cheaper than a month ago and 39 cents less than a year ago.

The highest price recorded for gas in Hawaii was $4.61 a gallon, back in April 2012.

As The New York Times reports, the nearly 50 percent decline in oil prices since June has been good for America and bad for Russia, Iran and Venezuela.

Let’s keep some perspective, however: The national average for a gallon of unleaded Friday is $2.32, almost a buck cheaper than at the same time last year.

And, while folks in Honolulu will pay $3.42 a gallon on average to fill their tanks (and well under $3 at places like Costco), it will cost $3.77 in Wailuku, Maui.
