The U.S. Senate fell five votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to override President Obama’s veto of the Keystone XL Pipeline legislation.
Hawaii Sens. Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz were among members voting “nay” in the 62-37 vote, which happened Wednesday.
As The Associated Press reports, it’s the first time that Congress “has voted on whether to override Obama’s veto, and could be a sign of things to come with Republicans in charge of the House and Senate.”
Republicans argue that the pipeline would create jobs, but Democrats say it would not create that many jobs and does not help the nation move toward renewable energy sources.
